Overview
Experience the City Tour in the capital of Samana, where you will engage with local life and create lasting memories with its residents. Officially known as Santa Bárbara de Samaná, this city, established in 1756, offers an opportunity to explore a quaint local market, visit two distinct churches, and enjoy shopping.
We will delve into the history and share insights about the culture of the Dominican Republic. Strolling along the picturesque "Avenida la Marina," we'll encounter "Pueblo Príncipe," a charming shopping center designed to resemble a vibrant Caribbean village.
A leisurely walk along the seaside promenade known as "Malecón" will provide a view of the iconic iron bridge that connects the bay's islets to the Samaná promontory. Built in the 1970s, this pedestrian bridge has become a symbol of the city. Our excursion will continue through the center as we explore the governmental buildings.
The Samaná Peninsula is as coveted today as it was in the 16th century. Pirates hid in its lush, palm-filled forests, isolated beaches, and hidden caves, while European and Haitian troops competed over its deep water, protected bay.
Today, Samaná–often abbreviated to refer to the entire peninsula–is well connected by land and air, yet it remains the DR’s secluded, paradisiacal escape of wild beaches, coconut plantations, and rainforests. Its rolling mountains and valleys form the crystalline rivers that feed into the Atlantic, as they cascade toward brilliant white sand beaches stretching hundreds of kilometers all around the peninsula’s rocky coastline.

Schedule.
Santa Barbara de Samana, Walking City Tour
Prepare for an early morning as we head to our meeting point in Santa Barbara de Samaná, which may take about an hour depending on your location. Upon your arrival, our local expert will provide you with the day's schedule, serve some coffee or natural juice, and give you access to the restroom as we prepare for our walking city tour.
Our first stop will be the Santa Barbara City Hall, where we will meet some of the staff before continuing to La Chorcha. This temple, an architectural marvel built in 1901 and shipped from England to Samaná, symbolizes freedom for the Afro-descendants who arrived from the United States. They constructed it and built a communal life around this church, showcasing the beauty of interculturality.
Next, we will visit the local market, where you'll have the chance to taste some local fruits and meet the vendors selling organic products like coconut oil and chocolate, all while enjoying the stunning views of the bay. Afterward, we will stop at El Pueblito, a vibrant area featuring colorful architecture designed as a plaza with restaurants, banks, and public offices. Here, you'll have time to take photos before we proceed to the Whale Museum and Los Puentes of Samaná.
The small museum dedicated to humpback whales plays a crucial role in local education and attracts many visitors during whale season. Before heading to Los Puentes, we will learn interesting facts about these magnificent creatures.
Located in the bay and accessed via the Malecón that lines Santa Bárbara de Samaná, the Samaná Bridges connect to the islands of Linares and Vigía.
Once we return to town, a fresh lunch will be waiting for you, typically consisting of fish, chicken, white rice, green salad, and pasta, with options for water or soda.
To conclude the day, we’ll take you to a local bakery to sample traditional bread from the Samaná province.
End Time: 3:00 PM
